I Bostons irske fattig-område lever de katolske tvillingebrødre MacManus og Connor. Efter en episode på Sankt Patricks dag kommer brødrene til at slå et par russiske mafiamedlemmer ihjel, men frigives af gangsterspecialisten Paul Smecker. Det tager brødrene som et tegn fra Gud og sætter sig for at dræbe alle syndige og kriminelle i Boston område, først med politiets accept og sidst med kirkens.
